I have just learnt how to post a blog in our homepage and I hope to maintain some momentum here.
We started monitoring Chagar Hutang for nesting emergences in mid January 2008 and as of now, there have been more than 70 nestings! We just got our very first hawksbill nesting early this morning and its none other than “Little Princess,” the one we satellite-tracked in 2001 and which has been returning to nest consistently since she was first tagged in 1993. It’s an amazing start for the season and we are all excited about the potentially high nesting density this year.
Another piece of good news is that our first batch of volunteers for the season, Slot A were able to enjoy the full complement of experiences the volunteer program has to offer, from hatchling emergences to mating events and of course nesting turtles.
I have been to Redang three times already this season and each time I come back, I come away happy knowing that something more has been done for the program and Chagar Hutang. The pictures posted here speak for themselves….
- Newly-tiled floor and gas-powered fridge and freezer
- New artwork
- Posters
- Hawksbill
Note the newly tiled floor in the kitchen and gas-powered fridge and freezer. The new artwork is by Gary, aided by staff and Slot A volunteers. The poster and mounted hawksbill are some of the exhibits you can view at the Turtle Gallery.
It really looks like 2008 is going to be a busy season not just for the turtles, but for us as well. We received our first group of visitors from Tanjung Tikas, Perhentian yesterday and next week, on the 22nd we are scheduled to receive a group of 100 secondary school kids in the morning. Then again on the 28th, we will host a special camp for high school kids coming all the way from the Shanghai American School. Come May, we will be releasing 12 two-year old green turtles raised at Aquaria KLCC. It is going to be a busy year, but I’m not complaining.
