TCC @ Mangkok
Turtle Conservation Centre, TCC (Point A in the map above) is located at Kampung Mangkok, near Penarik in the district of Setiu in Terengganu. It is approximately 60 km north of Kuala Terengganu, 110 km south of Kota Bharu, 260 km from Kuantan, and about 570 km from Kuala Lumpur.
Alternatively, you may take a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Kuala Terengganu (TGG). Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and FireFly operate numerous daily flights to Kuala Terengganu. TCC is approximately 50 km north of the Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu.
We rented the old Kampung Mangkok Community Hall (Balai Raya) in January 2010 and have started developing it into a Mini Turtle Museum since then. It was officially opened on Saturday, 26th June 2010 in a simple opening ceremony attended by invited guests from Kuala Terengganu as well as a lot of kids from the village.
Some of the exhibits in the Mini Turtle Museum include a male green turtle skeleton, some river and painted terrapin shells and skulls, taxidermied and preserved specimens of turtle and terrapin eggs and embryos as well as hatched turtle and terrapin egg shells. A series of posters that depict the research and conservation projects that TCC carries out are also on display.
Entrance to the Mini Turtle Museum is free. However, it is only open whenever we are NOT conducting Turtle Camps in primary schools or Awareness Campaigns in resorts or river surveys in the various rivers in Terengganu. To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage you to get in touch with us to confirm the dates you would like to visit the museum before traveling all the way to Setiu. While in Setiu, you could also participate in some other activities, for example:
- Mangrove Replanting Program, carried out by WWF-Malaysia, or
- Firefly Watching, conducted by the local fishermen in the Setiu River.
