Terrapin Independence Day (TID) Our TID banner donated by Tolahah Creative Solution has been used since 2005

Terrapin Independence Day (TID) or “Hari Kemerdekaan Tuntung” in the Malaysian language, is an annual event that was concieved to release terrapins head-started in the Setiu River Terrapin Recovery Project. Educational and awareness programs are also carried out in conjunction with the TIDs. However, the most significant and mind-changing experience for the participants is the physical release of the terrapins, the act of setting an animal free into its natural environment.

In this page, we will provide a short write-up on each TID carried out with pictures to show the various activities undertaken. The number of river terrapins released during each event is shown under the River Terapin Recovery Project.  Apart from the TIDs, terrapin releases are also held for special group requests.  The TIDs, initially carried out under the Turtle Research and Rehabilitation Group of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu are now annual events carried out by the Turtle Conservation Centre.
