Project Title:
Determining the performance of head-started Southern river terrapins (Batagur affinis) in the Setiu River, Terengganu, Malaysia.
Funding Agency:
Turtle Conservation Fund
Project Duration:
January – December 2011
The objective of the project is to determine the performance of head-started Southern river terrapins (Batagur affinis) that have been released into the Setiu River between 2005 and 2009.
Project Activities:
On 5th April 2011, we constructed a simple but sturdy basking trap with some PVC pipes and plastic-coated wire mesh. Two pieces of plywood were secured to the basking trap, one providing a ramp for the terrapins to climb onto the trap, and the other smaller piece allows the terrapins to fall into the trap once disturbed. Plastic buoys were attached to each side of the trap and the structure was secured to two nearby trees.
On 6th April 2011, we deployed the basking trap into the Setiu River.
