It was a very brief stay in Chagar Hutang (CH) this time around, just one night, but eventful as always.
I got back from Redang yesterday and what a full 3 days it has been. I literally hopped from the Laguna ferry to our own SiPenyu I where I was greeted by Slot D volunteers who had just completed their round island snorkeling trip with Mahadi.
We started monitoring Chagar Hutang for nesting emergences in mid January 2008 and as of now, there have been more than 70 nestings! We just got our very first hawksbill nesting early this morning and its none other than “Little Princess,” the one we satellite-tracked in 2001 and which has been returning to nest consistently since she was first tagged in 1993. It’s an amazing start for the season and we are all excited about the potentially high nesting density this year.
The children gathered excitedly around the table, admiring the marine life figures made out of plasticine. Most of them were turtles — a turtle laying eggs, a turtle swimming in the sea and a hatchling crawling out of its egg.
The state’s first ever river terrapin tracking project has got off to a good start. A three-year-old terrapin was tagged with an ultrasonic tracking device on Monday, and it was found the following day about 200 metres upstream from where it was released at Pak Lah Teh.
